PREVIEW OF THE 2018 ANNUAL BARBERSHOP SHOW IN LOS ALAMOS
The Los Alamos Lads of Enchantment and the Santa Fe Harmonizers will jointly present the 2018 Annual Barbershop Harmony Show in Los Alamos on Friday, October 26th and Saturday, October 27th (7:00 PM) at the United Church of Los Alamos.
The opening part of the show, “Live in Harmony” will feature the combined Los Alamos and Santa Fe choruses and their quartets under the direction of Maurice Sheppard. The second part of the show will feature Special Guest Quartet, Clutch, the 2014 Southwestern District Quartet Champion and the world’s 11th ranked quartet at the Barbershop Harmony Society’s 2018 International Convention.
“Live in Harmony”, narrated by Jeff Favorite, will explore the importance of living life to its fullest and making the most of every moment in our work, play, and personal lives. Although work can sometimes be mundane and dreary (“The Banana Boat Song”; “Sixteen Tons”), it can be a lot more enjoyable with a song and the right frame of mind (“Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah”; “Heigh-Ho”; “A Spoonful of Sugar”).
The show also considers the value of a vacation (“Let’s Get Away from it all”) and takes the audience to the ball park to enjoy the great American pass-time of baseball (“The Star Spangled Banner”; “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”).
Finally, the show reminds the audience of the importance of family (“The Lion Sleeps Tonight”), love (“When I Fall In Love”; “Can You Feel The Love Tonight”), remembrance of our departed brethren (“Go Rest High on That Mountain”, the 1996 Country Music Song of the Year written by Vince Gill), and hope (“Over the Rainbow”).
Special Guest Quartet, Clutch, is an accomplished, well-balanced quartet based in the Dallas, TX area. Members of the group are Scott Hale – lead, Markus Kang – bass, Steven Keener – baritone and Charlie Lotspeich – tenor.
Clutch first gained prominence by winning both the Novice and Open Quartet Competitions at the 2014 Southwestern District Convention. Since entering international competition in 2015, Clutch has placed among the world’s top 20 quartets each year, and this year Clutch advanced to 11th place in the world at the 2018 Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Convention.
Besides singing in Clutch, Marcus, Scott and Charlie are also members of Dallas’s renowned Vocal Majority Chorus which won the Gold Medal at the 2018 International Convention.
Marcus Kang – Clutch’s strong, charismatic bass – will be visiting Los Alamos for the second year in a row. Marcus was a crowd favorite when he sang bass with last year’s well-received Guest Quartet, Southern Company.
Immediately after the Friday night show, there will be an “Afterglow” at Graves Hall with a snack and additional singing by the guest quartet and the Los Alamos and Santa Fe barbershoppers for a modest $5 donation.
Please note that for the second year show times have been moved up to 7:00. Admission is $15 and $5 for students. Tickets can be obtained from chorus members, CB Fox or at the door.
