PREVIEW OF THE 2017 ANNUAL BARBERSHOP SHOW
The Los Alamos Lads of Enchantment and the Santa Fe Harmonizers will jointly present the 2017 Annual Barbershop Harmony Show in Los Alamos on Friday, November 10th and Saturday, November 11th at the United Church of Los Alamos (7:00 PM, each night).
The first part of the show will feature the combined Los Alamos and Santa Fe choruses and quartets, the second part of the show will feature the 2016 Southwestern District Quartet Champions, Southern Company, and the show will conclude with a salute to our veterans, in honor of Veterans’ Day on November 11th.
The opening segment, titled “Dreams –Where All Things Begin”, was written by Chorus Director, Maurice Sheppard and lead, Jim Goforth. “Dreams” takes a light-hearted look at our dreams and the subsequent travails on the road to fruition. Although the obstacles to achieving one’s dreams can be challenging, they have inspired numerous moving songs to keep our dreams in focus.
Some of the songs in the opening segment are three movingly wistful entreaties – “A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes” (Cinderella), “When You Wish Upon A Star” (Pinocchio), and “Over The Rainbow” (The Wizard of Oz), as well as the extremely popular standards, “All I Have To Do Is Dream” (The Everly Brothers), “Daydream” (The Lovin’ Spoonfull) and “All I Do Is Dream of You” (Judy Garland).
“Southern Company” (SC), the 2016 Southwestern District Quartet Champion of the Barbershop Harmony Society, will highlight the second segment of the show. The multitalented quartet of John Sifuentes (tenor), Trevor Crawford (lead), Nick Ruiz (baritone), Marcus Kang (bass), is a young group from the Dallas/San Marcos areas of Texas.
John Sifuentes works as a retail manager during the day and sings and plays guitar in his own band. Lead Trevor Crawford is a professional artisan furniture maker. Nick Ruiz is a student at TCU and the vocal percussionist and principle arranger of The Horned Tones, TCU’s award-winning all-male acappella group.
Bass Marcus Kang has a degree in music education. In addition to singing with SC, he won another Southwestern District Championship with Clutch Quartet (2014), and he is the baritone of the 2017 BHS Youth Quartet Champion Flightline.
The show will close with a trio of songs – “The Armed Forces Medley”, “This Is My Country” and “Let There Be Peace On Earth” – to honor US service veterans.
Immediately after the Friday night show, there will be an “Afterglow” at Graves Hall with a snack and additional singing for a modest $5 donation.
Please notice that the shows will begin at 7:00 PM, instead of the traditional 7:30 PM start time. Admission is $15 and $5 for students.
Tickets can be obtained from chorus members, CB Fox or at the door.
We note that 2017 is the third year that the Lads and the Harmonizers are being joined by women on the risers. Although a few Barbershop choruses have had women singers, it is now an official Barbershop Harmony Society policy to welcome all men and women, young and old, to come together and sing four-part barbershop harmony.
